Climbing the Vine of Learning – Śīkṣāvallī

Climbing the Vine of Learning – Śīkṣāvallī

Six Workshops by Zoom with Liz Knott 11 December 2020 – 12 February 2021

Śīkṣāvallī, the first chapter of the Taittirīya-upaniṣat, comprises the rules of Vedic chanting, what om represents, the concept of svādhyāya, philosophy, prayers; and advice on relationships, morals and ethics. The twenty-two Śīkṣāvallī paragraphs vary greatly in sound, rhythm and difficulty. Some words are familiar – others challenging. There are joyous passages and others more contemplative.
The aim of the workshops is to chant through the whole of Śīkṣāvallī – it takes about 25 minutes in total – but initially we may focus on the more accessible paragraphs. You need to be familiar with the rules of Vedic chanting and an experienced chanter. Group online chanting is not a suitable platform to teach Vedic chanting so the workshops will offer the opportunity to experience the sound of chanting by way of listen-repeat without checking for accuracy.
