Teaching Your First Class

Do you remember the first yoga class you taught?

Rich's blog has just recalled some very vivid memories.

My first class was a private class that I ran on a Monday morning in the function room above the local pub. My nerves were so bad that I was sick and ill for most of the night before. I was training with the BWY (my DCT was Hilary Macrea) and I was still walking with a stick so my teaching was largely conducted while sat in a chair.

One of my friends on the same course began teaching at about the same time (she shall remain nameless). Her first class was attended by a young man with an entire body tattoo (this became more and more evident as the class progressed) and an eye watering array of body piercings.

What was your first experience of teaching?

first class

I vividly remember the first class I did - I'd been practicing yoga for about 2 months...(gulp, yes: 2 months!) ...and a friend asked me to teach to his English Language students ( he was a TEFL teacher). So a bunch of Japanese, Spanish, French students were my guinea pigs. But the scary thing was that at the end of the class when I asked if there were any questions, one woman asked what happened to the soul after death. Given I knew very little about what happens to the body before death, this was deep water for me...
Still, a good lesson in how much students can project on to yoga teachers maybe...
