the lobster - a new asana
I recently had a senior moment when teaching my Monday evening class. Their next posture was to be "godapitham" - the lizard - which I first came across in Gary Kraftsow's book "Yoga for Wellness". But could I remember the name. I was sure it began with "l", and the only word that occurred to me was "lobster".
Once the class had stopped laughing, I formulated the following description of it:
Lie face down, forehead on the floor, legs together, arms outstretched and parallel, with palms on the floor. On an inhale, come up into salabhasana - legs raised from the floor, arms, head and shoulders also raised, fingers all together, but with a space between index fingers and thumbs. Hold your breath until you turn bright red, then sway your legs from side to side, while at the same time snapping your thumbs against your fingers.
Why not try it yourself??
PS I can't find the Sanskrit for "lobster" - the best I can come up with is maha ganalina or "large shrimp" - so "mahagalinasana".
