A two volume introduction to the Sanskrit language
If you want to try learning Sanskrit, this is the best text book I have seen - and I have seen a few.
It introduces the Devanagari alphabet in easy stages, and shows you clearly how to form the letters. The grammar is also introduced in easy stages, and you really do feel that you are making progress. Each chapter has exercises to test your understanding, and the answers are in the back of the book so that you can study on your own. There's also a nice section at the end with lots of Sanskrit sayings, many of which will be familiar to you from the Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads.
It is a two volume set, but you may find that volume One teaches you as much as you need to know (although I like the way Book 2 uses verses from the Bhagavad Gita to introduce new teaching points!)
It is a hardback book, quite sturdy, printed on good quality paper, fairly large format and easy to read.
It costs about £24, and should be available via Amazon.
