The AYS convention
Hello, am encouraged by the Margo and Carole dialogue to start something else up as a topic. I am a student teacher with Ranju and Dave and attending the AYS convention for the first time this year to see what the rest of AYS are like and experience some of your classes, as well as the legendary Peter Hersnack's sessions. Really looking forward to it.
But I am bringing one of my students as well as he wants to come and see what it is all about and really enjoys this approach to yoga. Are there others like me also taking students and not sure how to sort out what classes are good for them and what are good for us as teachers? Will there be a way of identifying like-minded scared and shy ? I am worried for instance that I love chanting but my student has never done it before and I dont want to put him off by sitting him in on a class where he is completely bemused because it is all rather over his head.
I would be interested in finding out others' views on this and any guidance from those who have done it before.
Thanks,
Linda

It's great you're coming to
It's great you're coming to the Convention Linda - I hope it'll
inspire both you and you're student. The list with workshop titles should help - but do chat with either Dave or I if you want to nearer the time.

The AYS Convention
Hi Linda
I'm sorry I haven't got around to posting you a reply earlier but I have been away on one of Paul Harvey's Further Studies weekends. We are currently working our way through Chapter 4 of the Yoga Sutra and so I am not the only one in the group with a brain that now closely resembles cream cheese.
However, despite this disability I will do my best to allay your fears.
I noticed that you'd signed up for the Convention, and of course I know that your a Sadhana Mala student, so I was delighted when I saw your registration. This year we seem to have more newbies than usual coming along, and they are not all trainee teachers like yourself so your student will not be alone. I have been to a few of these types of do's before and the aYs bash usually has a particularly light and affectionate feel to it. We take our Yoga seriously, but not ourselves - as you will find out at the Concert on Saturday evening - but more about that at another juncture.
I'm not sure about identifying you as a group...you might feel even more exposed.
About a month before the event we will send you a sheaf of papers giving you information about the venue and tutors (they don't know this yet - another new feature), a workshop programme and a description of the workshops so that you can make an informed choice. Classes will be clearly marked if they require a particular level of ability. And you can always drop the Conventiion Team a line, or have a word with Ranju and Dave, if there is anything on the programme that your not sure about.
I hope this helps,
Jane Harris
AYS Convention
Hi. As another newcomer to the Convention, I'm also looking forward to attending. I'll know some people there and plenty I don't but we all share an interest in yoga so I expect there will be lots to talk about with others.
What I hope to find at Convention is workshops with a wide variety of topics and it will be great to choose what to go to depending on what feels relevant to me at the moment or just because it sounds interesting. Linda, perhaps that will be the case for your student too - I'll sure he will find workshops that appeal or sound interesting. Going to a chant workshop with no previous experience might be like jumping in at the deep end (although without any tragic end result) but if you want to really experience chanting and its energy, thats probably a great way to do it. He might find it inspiring!
Thats another thing I'm hoping for - a bit of inspiration, some ideas and a bit of momentum to keep my yoga moving forward.
Convention for Beginners
At some point before the date of Convention you will receive details of all the workshops, which should help you decide what to do.
I'm not sure if we have a system of identifying "scared and shy". Jane Harris might have something to say on this.
I hope other novices or near-novices will also write something here. Apart from anything else it's useful to know what people want - then we can respond to their needs.
