aYs 2013 Convention - YOGA AND EMOTIONS with SRIRAM

aYs Convention 2013 - 19th-21st July
Venue: Harper Adams University,Newport, Shropshire.
BOOKING NOW OPEN

The Yogasutra is an excellent text to refer to, to understand the nature of emotions, the diverse roles they play in our spiritual quest as well as in our afflictions. Understanding the emotions along these lines is an excellent way of learning to cope with them in life. It is also a step towards finding greater depths in one’s own yoga practice.

SRIRAM REVIEW - BY RANJU ROY

"I'd first heard of Sriram as Desikachar's singing teacher some years ago and so was delighted when he accepted an invitation to lead a two day workshop in Taunton in May 2011.

About aYs

aYs

The Association for Yoga Studies is a community of Yoga teachers and yoga students at all levels. Members share a common interest in the approach to yoga known as “viniyoga”. Teachers within this approach offer one-to-one teaching and/or therapy, group classes, workshops and retreats.

Although aYs members share a common interest in the teachings of T Krishnamacharya, TKV Desikachar and his senior students, the organisation remains independent from KHYF (Krisnamacharya Healing & Yoga Foundation). It was Kausthub Desikachar’s desire to disband other national organisations (there were, and are, similar organisations in France and the USA) and to unite the whole tradition under a world umbrella organisation – hence the formation of KHYF in 2005. However, in not disbanding we chose to remain as an independent community of Yoga teachers and students of Yoga at all levels. We are run democratically by the members for the members; we have a formal constitution and an elected committee. Our teachers and members are expected to adhere to the strict code of ethics laid down by the BWY (British Wheel of Yoga).

Vairagya

Month of:
November 2012
Sutra Title:
Vairagya
Translation:
Non-attachment
Sutra Chapter and Verse:
Yoga Sutra chapter 1 verse 15
This month's commentator:
Margo von Romberg

Here are some thoughts on vairāgya (non-attachment). In Yoga Sutras 1.15 Patanjali says:
“Nonattachment is the mastery of desire for perceived external objects, as well as for internal spiritual objects, heard or revealed.” (Bouanchaud's translation)

aYs Joins British Council for Yoga Therapy

The BCYT is the UK forum for yoga therapy organisations, promoting high standards in the training and provision of yoga therapy. It supports the regulation process provided by the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (which is recognised by the Dept. of Health) and promotes yoga therapy to the public, medical profession and other organisations.

By joining the BCYT, aYs is involved in the development of professional yoga therapy standards and the accreditation of yoga therapy training courses by the BCYT. In the future, membership of BCYT allows aYs to run accredited training courses for yoga therapy consistent with our viniyoga approach and which will be nationally recognised as being of a high professional standard.

(NB for aYs yoga therapists – both Paul Harvey’s Practitioner training and Sadhana Mala’s training are recognised as meeting the standards of the BCYT.)

2012 Convention

Our ninth convention brought together over 100 people interested in this approach to yoga in a wonderful weekend of camaraderie and shared study. Peter Hersnack was the main speaker and he took as his focus several themes from Patanjali's Yoga Sutra. We studied the yama and niyama where Peter offered fresh insights into themes with which all yoga teachers will be familiar. He then discussed the 9 obstacles and the 9 remedies from chapter 1. Peter's senior teachers also gave workshops around these themes and there was a wealth of varied topics covered in the other workshops. It was as much a joy to try workshops from new aYs teachers as to return to sample teaching from old aYs hands.

As ever we had a warm welcome at Harper Adams College and Debbie Falchi's first attempt at admin was excellent. The convention ended with our AGM and the installation of our new Director, Jane Harris - we wish her well. (AGM minutes will shortly appear on this site)
